Supporting self-development

The experience of “Fondazione per il Sud” two years after its creation

23-24 October 2008

Initiative promoted by Fondazione per il Sud (www.fondazioneperilsud.it) to inform the many actors involved about the opportunities and the available tools to promote to social infrastructuration and development of the South.
Fondazione per il Sud is a private subject that was born less than two years ago, on the 22nd November 2206, from the alliance between two extraordinarily active and dynamic entities: the bank foundations and the voluntary work and third sector world. The aim of the Foundation is to promote the social infrastructuration of the South of Italy.

This event is divided into three autonomous initiatives.

Aim of the seminar
Fragmentation seems to be a distinguishing note of the southern context, also within the activity of organizations and third sector networks. The difficulty in building stable networks around shared aims is evident in studies and real experiences. This seminar’s aim is to focus on social infrastructuration as a mean of participation of civil society in the South development processes. In fact, it represents a strategic choice around which the pact among bank foundations and voluntary work and third sector has been built, which led to the constitution of Fondazione per il Sud. To make clear the meaning that such theme can actually take, to point out today’s immaterial infrastructuration levels, to suggest the ways through which such aim can be pursued are essential steps to give more and more efficaciousness to this Foundation and to guide all participants’ efforts towards shared directions.

An innovative tool for self-development: community foundations.

Aim of this seminar
Community foundations are “expressions of local situations” able to attract donations from their territory and invest them in social activities in the same area. The experience of the community foundations is imposing itself as a successful practice in the North of the Country, specially in Lombardia, but it is still lacking in the South of Italy. Fondazione per il Sud, receiving this practice, has pointed it out as an innovative model of intervention also in the infrastructuration projects of the South. This seminar aims at supporting a proper knowledge of this model and the functioning experiences of the community foundations, making clear the real ways of promotion and support carried out by Fondazione per il Sud.
